When we’re very young, our bodies contain a high level of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that attracts and holds moisture. Hyaluronic acid is found in our skin and in our lips, and when we’re young, those higher levels keep skin and lips looking plump and refreshed. As we age, though, our body doesn’t produce nearly as much hyaluronic acid, and that means our lips can’t hold on to moisture the way they used to. At the same time, our levels of collagen begin to decline. Collagen networks are a big reason why our skin and our lips feel resilient, soft and firm when we’re young. As collagen levels decrease, our lips and the skin around them start to lose that firm fullness.
Restylane and JUVÉDERM both contain hyaluronic acid. When these solutions are injected into your lips, they help replace the acids lost to aging, supplementing the hyaluronic acid your body is still producing, so your lips can attract and retain plumping moisture.
